Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella visited the Thompson Rivers University, Faculty of Law on November 24, 2015 to speak to the students and engage in a lively question and answer session with the audience. Students packed the Barber Centre of the House of Learning, leaving standing room only. Justice Abella fielded numerous questions from the audience, providing insight on such topics as the evolution of equality in Canada, her career path, and the increasing number of self-represented litigants in the legal system. Following the talk, Justice Abella joined local members of the Kamloops Bar Association, students, and Faculty for a welcome reception at the Faculty of Law.
Justice Abella is among the most distinguished jurists in Canada and the world. She was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004, having spent 12 years on the Ontario Court of Appeal. She has lectured or held visiting appointments at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Hebrew University, and McGill. She is a member of the Royal Society of Canada and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has received 35 honourary degrees. She chaired the 1984 Royal Commission on Equality in Employment, the Ontario Law Reform Commission, and has authored 80 articles and edited 4 books.
